Mum’s the word for Tuscan artist Amalia Ciardi Duprè. Born in 1934, Ciardi Dupre is celebrated for her intuitive, earthy sculptures that recall Tuscany’s Etruscan ancestry. Fascinated by classic mythology, Biblical themes and modern-day human suffering, Ciardi Duprè has created works for churches throughout Tuscany including one of the largest terracotta reliefs in the world which depicts scenes from the Old and New Testaments. It is in Vincigliata’s Church of Santa Maria. Other works by Ciardi Duprè can be viewed at the church of San Bernardino a Borgunto in Fiesole, where all the art displayed is created by women. Ciardi Duprè is the great-great granddaughter of famed sculptor Giovanni Duprè and grand-niece to her namesake, artist Amalia Duprè, whose statue of Santa Reparata graces the façade of Florence’s Duomo. Her artistic legacy is now permanently part of Florence’s art scene thanks to the 2015 inauguration of her own venue, the Museo Amalia Ciardi Duprè (CAD) on Florence’s Via degli Artisti, which is both a museum and a working studio, where she continues to train women artists. AWA restored two bronze and wood sculptures by Duprè, Maternity and Maternity Lying Down in 2014.
